Football District Champions Head into Playoffs
Last Friday, the Geneva football team beat Reicher Catholic 49-14. That game had been circled on our calendar all year, and the team worked incredibly hard all week in preparation. This last district victory meant that we claimed the title of District Champions and now get to host a first-round, home playoff game.
For us seniors we only have at a maximum four games left, and each one could be our last from here on out. Last year, we came so close to the state championship—losing to the would-be champions in a one-score, semi-final game. This year, the whole team is determined to not let the opportunity pass. We have been talking all year about making a playoff run, but the time for talk is over. Now, every week and every practice, counts.
I can say with confidence that the team comradery has never been stronger. I think this is what will get us through the tough games. We have been preparing since last season’s end in preparation for these last four games. After many team dinners, bus trips, and devotionals later, our team has developed a strong bond that will last forever. The hard practices have paid off, and the team is at its best right now. Our defense has been solid all year, and our offense has been on a roll the last few games. Since we have played some top-tier teams in preseason, we won’t be seeing any teams in the playoffs that are better than ones we’ve already faced. As the season nears its climax, all our team needs to do is stay focused, keep working hard in practice, and execute in the games.
